More than 80 people share their views about living in local care homes

Here’s a summary of the latest ‘Enter & View’ reports we’ve published as part of our ongoing care homes project:

PARKSIDE

Residents interviewed: 32

Selection of residents’ comments:

‘I like everything, I am happy here. The food is good. The staff are lovely and wonderful, can’t fault them.’

‘I enjoy my food, curry is favourite and roast dinner is good. I join in activities, throwing ball game, exercises, gets me out of my shell. Staff are lovely, they put up with my untidiness. My relatives can visit anytime.’

Healthwatch Reading observations: The home manager was welcoming, knows all the residents and their families well, and encourages people to bring their own items with them to make their rooms as homely as possible.

Residents’ main suggestion for improvement: More weekend activities would be good

JASMINE HOUSE

Residents interviewed: 15

Selection of comments:

‘Food is good, enjoy the activities. The carers are good. They seem to look after me.’

‘A man comes, does activities, he does exercises, the other guy when he comes in was fantastic, we had a disco ball.’

‘I would like more readers [audiobooks]…. I have a player, but I don’t think anybody knows how to use it.’

Healthwatch Reading observations: Staff seemed to know residents well, there are sensory puzzles and tactile objects, and big signs so that residents can easily read them.

Residents’ main suggestion for improvement: Would like more say over the food menu.

LAKESIDE

Residents interviewed: 22

Selection of comments:

‘Good size bedrooms and ensuite, carers very good, food very good, get choices and visitors come anytime.’

‘Good food, no complaints what so ever, so many people to talk to, looked after well by carers, so far, no complaints.’

‘Like to go out, garden is lovely, I go and sit, I feel happy and safe.’

Healthwatch Reading observations: Pleasant setting with views over a lake and there is a cafe for visitors. Staff use an app which has information about each resident such as their fluid intake.

Residents’ main suggestion for improvement: Some said they wanted to be consulted about the food menu.

NAVARA LODGE

Residents interviewed: 12

Selection of comments:

‘Food very good, varied – the cook will change if you do not like what is on the menu.’

‘The best thing I did is to come here – the staff are happy, and Paul [the manager] and his family are lovely.’

‘They do lots of activities, they don’t leave anyone out. Very good with helping me wash and bath.’

Healthwatch Reading observations: The home has a big garden which many residents like spending time in; the inside décor is dated but clean and overall it is homely with a manager who knows residents well.

Residents’ main suggestion for improvement: The majority of residents said they would not change anything about the home.
